I am very excited today to show you some pictures of a maternity dress I made recently for a friend's wedding.  I did not have even one official maternity dress and this one fits so much better than my regular dresses!  I am sorry that I did not take a picture without the sweater because this dress does have cute short sleeves, but I just did not think about that!

I'm Wearing:

Dress- Simplicity 2549Misses Special Occasion Dresses
(I used a different bodice pattern though with a rounded neckline and made the front skirt piece wider to fit over a baby belly!)
White Cardigan Sweater- Fashion Bug
Black Flats- Payless
Pearl Drop Earrings- Claires
Necklace and Bracelet- I don't remember!

On Halloween

Cemetery decorated for All Saints Day in Slovakia

I recently saw a photograph in a Slovak newspaper of a cemetery decorated for the “Halloween” season.  It was full of wreaths, ribbons and flowers arranged respectfully around the graves and candles and torches that lit up the cemetery as if for a Christmas festival.

This struck me as a much more pleasant way of celebrating the holiday than I am used to.  Here in the US we also celebrate the dead but in a much more morbid and horrible way.

The reason Halloween is connected with the dead is because in the Christian world this is the season of the souls in heaven and purgatory.  We celebrate the reward of these souls on Nov 1 and 2 the feast of all saints and all souls.

In the United States we celebrate the season of Halloween but in the secular world it has no connection whatsoever to the souls in heaven and purgatory.  So we admit some connection with the dead but this connection becomes either secularized (dressing up like animals or inanimate objects) or demonized (dressing up like witches, goblins, devils).

I am definitely not condemning Halloween traditions (the innocent ones)!  The greatest pleasures of a Catholic family can be found in the

celebration of holidays!  And Halloween is not evil; it is actually an abbreviation for All Hallowed Eve, the eve of all saints and all souls!  Just like in Slovakia where the festivities are wholesome and festive, we can celebrate American Halloween in a wholesome and festive way and much more so than our neighbors who don’t even know what they are celebrating!
Mothers must preserve traditions in their families and create the ambience of joyfulness and celebration!  The secret of a happy family is largely this.  A Catholic lady is the heart of the home and must try as hard as she can to bring pleasure to her husband and children.

So, just as the Christ Child is the reason for Christmas; the good souls who have died are the reason for Halloween.  Candy, pumpkins, mums, scarecrows, and costume parties might be a little secular to celebrate their happiness, but I see nothing wrong about them as long as you focus on the something better (i.e. Saints costume parties, praying at the cemetery, offering Masses for the deceased)!

Healthy Eating in an Unhealthy World

Healthy eating is something that all moms try to focus on.  We all know that we feel better emotionally and physically when we spend time preparing healthy meals.

It's not always that simple though.  Busy mothers know how complicated healthy eating can be.
I have read hundreds of delicious looking recipes on pinterest that require chopping and dicing and stewing that takes hours!  Is this really going to work when the baby needs fed or the laundry piles are calling?  Sometimes I ask myself if I will still have time to prepare food in the even busier years to come?

Lately I have been doing something about this question.  I have tried some new recipes and discovered something interesting.  Time spent cooking is rewarding.  Food is not just about getting nutrients into our bodies (although I know what that feeling is when I am battling hypoglycemia and morning sickness at the same time).  Healthy eating is about feeding the soul too!  Fast food is not just bad for your body, it is unhealthy for the mentality it creates, a mentality I have heard termed "Instant gratification".

Another benefit to healthy eating at home is the ambiance that comes about.  Does your dinner table look like this?

Unfortunately, neither does mine.  But there is something so attractive about the care that went into preparing such a display.  This kind of ambience (adapted a little to fit my small kitchen table) would be sure to make the food taste better and be more gratifying.

There is truth in the words of Fulton Sheen that women hold the "level of civilization".  Food can be a big aspect of that uplifting power as most people will admit, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach."

Our society is certainly not conductive to healthy eating.  Unhealthy eating habits are just too easy to form when people are always out of their homes and on the go!  This is not surprising considering that a healthy family must be there to support healthy eating!

(I know that there are times when fast or frozen food is just absolutely necessary during hard or busy times.  I in no way intend to condemn anyone who eats fast food.  I have done so myself quite often!  But this is the exception, not the rule.)

What do you do in your family about healthy eating?

Baby Announcement!!!

We are expecting another daughter!

I am due at the end of January- as some of you already know!  I just found out Saturday that the baby is a girl and I am thrilled!  Baby girls are so adorable and sweet and of course powerful!  The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world after all!

This pregnancy has been difficult so far with the tiredness of the first trimester and sickness that usually lasts throughout the second for me!  This is the reason why I haven't even had the energy to announce it on the blog!  I know I'll survive though!:)  I have been staying home most of the summer which works for Thomas and Beatrice since they just want to play all day anyway!

I am very grateful for how much we have been blessed!  There are so many women who want to have children and can't or who face a tragedy like miscarriage or injury of their children.  I just pray to be preserved from any unnecessary tragedy and the will to accept what comes!

So forgive me if the blog is a little neglected lately.  I have good reason and will keep you updated through Maternity Weekend In Feminine Dress pictures!  I am actually really excited to develop and share some ideas for dressing modestly while pregnant!  And I would really appreciate all of your ideas too!
